Search Engine Sadness

Think being popular is a good thing?  You would think that search engines would like it when a page is viewed many times, but not always.  According to the ebay documentation, the ebay search engine doesn't like it when a seller's listings are viewed many times but not purchased.  If a seller has listings that are always bridesmaids but never brides, the seller's listings show up lower in future search results.  For the ebay search engine, the best listing is one that is only viewed a few times before the item is purchased.  It makes sense, though it surprised me when I first read it.  The purpose of the ebay search engine is to match a buyer with an item to buy.  If a seller's listings get a lot of attention but no takers, then that is a problem.
